As a native Texan myself, Fort Worth holds a special place in my heart for its sophisticated upscale western charm.
With historic brick streets, western architecture, rustic wooden stables like Stockyard Station, railroad tracks, longhorns, a beautiful cacti garden surrounding River Ranch, and the beautiful surroundings of Hotel Drover, the Fort Worth Stockyards offers so much variety in one location.
Since Ariel had come to see me all the way from Virginia for her senior portraits, we wanted to make sure to incorporate all of those elements to create a gallery that felt vibrant, elegant, and matched the Texas vibe she came here to achieve.
From denim and cowboy boots on Exchange Avenue to a gorgeous Western inspired dress at Hotel Drover, every part of this session brought something different to her senior portraits.
Fort Worth Stockyards Senior Pictures
One of the things I love most about photographing seniors in the Fort Worth Stockyards is the incredible variety.
You can walk a relatively short distance and go from the iconic Fort Worth Stockyards sign and brick streets to beautiful architecture around Hotel Drover, gardens, rustic wooden fences, and open Texas landscapes.
That means your senior gallery doesn't have to look like it was photographed in one location.
For this session, we started right in the heart of the Stockyards with a look that felt perfectly western encompassing denim, turquoise jewelry, a lace top, a statement belt, and cowboy boots.
The iconic Stockyards Station sign provided the perfect backdrop for the opening image of the session. I love using recognizable Fort Worth locations in senior portraits because years from now these images will bring back memories of both this season of life and this unique location.
The brick streets also give us beautiful leading lines and plenty of room to create both full length portraits and more intimate images.
A Western Senior Session With a Modern Style
Western senior photography doesn't have to mean a traditional cowboy look. I love that the Stockyards is both rustic yet glamorous. With its historic western architecture, brick streets, beautiful landscaping, and upscale spaces like Hotel Drover, it offers a unique combination of Teas charm and sophistication.
I love incorporating subtle western details while keeping the overall style modern, feminine, and elevated.
For this session, denim and cowboy boots immediately connected her portraits to the Fort Worth Stockyards, while her turquoise jewelry and beautiful hair added personality and polish.
The result is a look that feels very Texas without feeling overly themed.
That’s always my goal when planning senior portraits. The location should complement the senior and their unique style. Since Ariel lives in the hills of Virginia and is an accomplished equestrian the Stockyards fit her look and personality perfectly.
Stockyards Senior Photographer: Rustic Details and Texas Texture
The Stockyards is full of textures that photograph beautifully.
Weathered wood, brick, stone, native grasses, cactus, railroad tracks, and historic architecture all create depth and interest in the photographs.
One of my favorite images from this session was photographed on a rustic wooden walkway.
The lines of the wood naturally lead toward her, while the warm light creates a soft glowing background.
These are the kinds of locations I look for when planning a Fort Worth senior photography session. Rather than simply finding a pretty background, I'm looking for places that give us opportunities for different poses, compositions, lighting, and moods.
Hotel Drover Senior Photographer
One of my favorite ways to add a more elevated feel to a Fort Worth Stockyards senior session is incorporating Hotel Drover.
The architecture and landscaping around Hotel Drover create a beautiful contrast to the rustic streets of the Stockyards.
For this part of the session, she changed into a gorgeous rust colored western inspired dress with white cowboy boots.
The color was perfect against the warm stone, greenery, and architecture surrounding Hotel Drover.
This is one of the reasons I love offering Hotel Drover as part of a Fort Worth senior photography experience.
We can create portraits that feel completely different from the images taken on Exchange Avenue, without having to travel to an entirely different part of Fort Worth.
The warm architecture and beautiful landscaping give the images a more sophisticated, editorial feeling while still maintaining that unmistakable Texas character.
Beautiful Light at Hotel Drover
The architecture is beautiful and it is bathed in beautiful golden light.
During this session, the evening sunlight filtered through the surrounding trees and created gorgeous warm highlights throughout her portraits. As always, light is what creates a stunning portrait and lends to the beauty of the subject like nothing else.
Some of my favorite images are actually taken in inconspicuous places where the senior is simply leaning against a stone wall or sitting on the brick walkway. These images allow the expression, hair, wardrobe, and personality to become the focal point of the photograph.
Adding Authentic Texas Locations to Your Senior Session
The Stockyards gives us plenty of opportunities to go beyond traditional portraits.
For this session, we incorporated native Texas vegetation, cacti surrounding River Ranch, railroad tracks, rustic fencing, and even the longhorn cattle.
These details make the gallery feel connected to Fort Worth.
The railroad tracks are always a favorite, displaying pieces of Fort Worth architecture far into the horizon. With the tracks stretching into the distance, we were able to create a completely different composition while keeping her western boots and Texas inspired wardrobe as part of the story.
These environmental portraits are especially fun because they don't feel like traditional studio senior pictures. These backgrounds feel distinctly western glam and distinctly Fort Worth.
